Hurricanes Weekly Newsletter – Week of Feb. 11-15

Welcome to the Holland Hurricanes weekly newsletter! Each week, we will fill you in on the latest news and information within the Holland College Athletics & Recreation Department.

 

Basketball star Alexa Rancourt named CCAA All-Canadian

On Tuesday, March 12, Alexa Rancourt was named a 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Basketball All-Canadian. 

The fourth year forward, from Charlottetown, P.E.I., had a dominant 2023-24 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) season. Rancourt led the ACAA in the regular season with 293 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and finished second with 16.3 points per game and with a 56.2 field goal percentage.

The 2024 ACAA Player of the Year helped the 10-8 squad earn a quarterfinal win at the 2024 ACAA Basketball Championships in Charlottetown earlier this month, defeating the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies, 76-54. The ‘Canes fell to following day to the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in the semi-finals.

Rancourt collected an overall 22 points, 29 rebounds, 13 assists, two steals, and two blocks between two games. She was named Holland’s Player of the Game against STU after recording 10 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists.

Recruits for the 2024-25 Holland Hurricanes

This week, the Holland Hurricanes announced several new recruits for the 2024-25 athletics season.

In women’s soccer and women’s basketball, the Hurricanes recruited 5’7” New Glasgow, N.S. native Karissa George. George is a midfielder in soccer, arriving from the Northern Nova United U18 and North Nova Varsity teams, and a guard in basketball, joining from the North Nova Varsity team.

In women’s rugby, the Hurricanes recruited 5’9” back row Grace Warner from Sussex Corner, N.B. Warner comes with experience from Sussex Regional High School, the St. John Trojans, and N.B. Spruce Senior Women team.

In men’s volleyball, the Hurricanes recruited 6’3” right side Lucas Lavigne from Bathurst, N.B. Lavigne arrives from the Nor’Est Lynx.

In football, the Hurricanes recruited 6’5” defensive end Jack de Vries from Somerset, N.S. De Vries joins Holland from the Central Kings Gators.

2024 awards night details announced

The 2023-24 Holland Hurricanes Awards night will take place at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall at the Prince of Wales Campus on Thursday, April 4.

All Hurricanes student-athletes, coaches, and staff are invited to join us and celebrate another great season of collegiate athletics – please be sure to RSVP to your invitation!

Unfortunately, the Hurricanes Awards night is not open to the public due to limitation in space.

 

McMillan Centre hosting 2024 P.E.I. high school championships

This week, the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement hosted the 2024 P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) High School Basketball Championships.

The tournament featured multiple levels of high school women’s and men’s basketball playoff action, including Senior AAA, Senior AA, and Senior A.

We hope everyone involved enjoyed the hospitality we had to offer, and we congratulate every team and player on their accomplishments!
